Touch screen features on a PDA or mobile phone
In the present, the user can interact with the PDA or mobile phone with the touch screen. Many PDA had touch screen from some years now, but also have some buttons, because for the users it was easier this way to have access to the programs they were using more often. But the Windows Mobile PDA though even further about the way a touch screen could be used, so they created also a stylus, that could be detachable and that can be used to write, make different selections etc, so that you don’t need to use the finger. Of course that the touch screens have different features, because many users have to write quite much on their PDA. For example an image of a keyboard or a virtual keyboard can be shown, with all the letters, so that the user can press it with his fingers or, if he finds it easier, with the stylus.
But one of the greatest features a touch screen has to help the user write faster is the “handwriting recognition”, where the user just writes the letter using his finger or stylus, and the PDA or mobile phone recognizes it due to a special program, which converts it later into text. The new phones have also the “multi-touch” feature, so the user can use the touch screen and make different selections using one or many fingers. Usually the mobile phones that have this “multi touch” feature have a capacitive touch screen. For using this screen with this feature, you don’t have the press very hard on it, just to swipe across it, because its technology isn’t relying on pressure. Instant it uses electrodes that can rapidly recognize an object with a conductive property, so there are chances that you cannot use a stylus with this type of touch screen.
Other mobile phones have resistive touch screen, formed by multiple layers. When you press it (using your finger or stylus), you are actually pressing a circuit, so it is relying on the pressure. But the disadvantage is that they don’t react if you just swipe a bit your finger on it. But the main advantage is that you can use anything to use it. So if you need to be precise while making some options, with a resistive touch screen at least you can use a stylus. But most of the new phones like Omnia HD have capacitive touch screens.
